Pronombres reflexivos en inglés, sujeto y objeto

Por lo general, la comunicación desarrolla una serie de reglas con las que agilizar la comprensión del mensaje. Por ejemplo, un caso muy claro de esta economía de la palabra la encontramos en los pronombres en inglés.  Su función consiste en reemplazar al sujeto y objeto de la frase para evitar repetirlo constantemente. 

Sin embargo, en algunas ocasiones, nos encontramos que el sujeto de la oración realiza una acción que repercute en sí mismo. Por lo tanto, tenemos que indicar al oyente, de alguna manera, esa característica. Por suerte, contamos con un elemento para especificar dicha acción: los pronombres reflexivos en inglés.

¿Qué son los pronombres de sujeto y objeto en inglés?

En primer lugar, vamos a distinguir los pronombres más comunes que existen en inglés. De esta manera, nos encontramos con los pronombres de sujeto, que son palabras que sustituyen al sujeto de la frase. También tenemos los pronombres de objeto, que se encargan de reemplazar al objeto sustantivo.

A continuación, os mostramos una tabla donde podéis ver cómo se emplean, la posición que ocupan y las diferencias o parecidos en su escritura.

Características de los pronombres de sujeto y objeto

Cuando empleamos la primera y segunda persona, tanto en singular como en plural, siempre hacemos referencia a una persona. Por otro lado, la tercera persona singular se divide en función de si hablamos de un hombre, una mujer o un elemento neutro. Como resultado de esta división, el pronombre en tercera persona plural (they/them) se puede emplear indistintamente para personas o cosas.

Además, los pronombres de objeto (me/you/us/them/him/her/it) los vamos a utilizar también después de algunas preposiciones (for/ to/ with, etc.). En las siguientes frases, de hecho, tenéis una serie de ejemplos muy habituales sobre esta característica en concreto.

There were some letters on the table, so I opened them.

Había unas cartas sobre la mesa, así que las abrí.

Liza gave these flowers for you. These aren’t for me.

Liza me dio estas flores para ti. No son para mí.

Do you know Sandra? Why are you staring at her?

¿Conoces a Sandra? ¿Por qué la estás mirando fijamente?

Mike wants to come with us to the cinema.

Mike quiere venir al cine con nosotros.

Where are my slippers? You’re stepping on them.

¿Dónde están mis zapatillas? Las estás pisando.

She is talking to you. You aren’t listening to her.

Ella te está hablando. No la estás escuchando.

¿Qué son los pronombres REFLEXIVOS en inglés?

Con respecto a los pronombres reflexivos en inglés, actúan como pronombres de objeto. Aunque, en esta ocasión, el objeto al que hacen referencia se trata, en realidad, del sujeto. Por este motivo, todos ellos terminan con la misma forma (-self para singulares y -selves para plurales). De esta manera, el oyente entiende de inmediato que la acción recae sobre quien la realiza.

María se compró un bolso.

The children looked at themselves in the mirror.

They want the prize for themselves.

Quieren el premio para sí mismos.

She scolded herself for acting so bad in front of the people.

BY con Pronombre Reflexivo

Ademas, otra manera de emplear los pronombres reflexivos consiste en enfatizar la autosuficiencia de la persona que ha realizado la acción mediante la preposición by.

En cuanto a su significado, lo cierto es que dependerá del contexto donde empleemos esta estructura. Por esa razón, se puede traducir de diferentes maneras. En todo caso, buscad la que os resulte más natural para vosotros. Para terminar, en las siguientes frases de ejemplo os mostramos las más habituales.
