A la hora de hacer preguntas en inglés, tienes tres opciones: preguntas de sí o no, de objeto o de sujeto. Cuando las formulas de forma directa, bueno, haces una pregunta normal. Sin embargo, las preguntas indirectas en inglés añaden un valor extra a tu cuestión.
En general, este tipo de estructura se utiliza para formular preguntas de manera educada. Pero, a su vez, también sirven para mostrar curiosidad, interés u otro aspecto subjetivo en función del contexto y situación donde se produzca. Además, las preguntas indirectas en inglés no siempre emplean el formato de pregunta. Así que, pasaré a explicarte todo esto sin perder más tiempo.

Las preguntas indirectas en inglés
Una pregunta directa en inglés no es más que una frase normal y, por lo tanto, tan solo cambiarás el orden del AUXILIAR y SUJETO para indicar el carácter interrogativo de la misma. En cambio, una pregunta indirecta <<camufla>> la pregunta dentro de otra. Es más, ni siquiera aparece con el formato de pregunta, sino de frase normal.
- Pregunta directa: AUX+SUJETO+VERBO+OBJETO?
- Pregunta indirecta: aux+sujeto+verbo + CONECTOR + SUJETO + (AUXILIAR) + VERBO + OBJETO?
Gracias a esta estructura, la pregunta que formulas se convierte en el OBJETO de otra pregunta. Así, evitas inquirir sobre un tema <<de frente>>, motivo por el cual las preguntas indirectas en inglés adquieren esa semántica de forma educada y respetuosa.
Las preguntas indirectas en inglés de sí o no
Como te he indicado antes, las preguntas indirectas en inglés emplean un conector entre la pregunta <<normal>> y la <<camuflada>>. Cuando se trate de una pregunta de sí o no, ese conector será WHETHER o IF, según prefieras. Por lo tanto, la estructura de este tipo de preguntas indirectas queda de la siguiente manera:
aux+sujeto+verbo + WHETHER/IF + SUJETO + (AUXILIAR) + VERBO + OBJETO?
Si te estás preguntando por qué he puesto AUXILIAR entre paréntesis, recuerda que la pregunta <<camuflada>> se formula con la estructura de una frase. Esto quiere decir que, cada vez que emplees el presente simple o el pasado simple, su forma afirmativa prescinde del auxiliar. No obstante, el resto de tiempos verbales requieren de su presencia.
A continuación, te mostraré algunos ejemplos para que compares la estructura directa con la indirecta, además de ver este uso y no uso del AUXILIAR recién comentado.

¿Está casada Sara?, pero ¿Sabes si Sara está casada?
Do you like music?, but Can you tell me if you like music?
¿Te gusta la música?, pero ¿Me podrías decir si te gusta la música?

¿Llegó Juan tarde anoche?, pero ¿Sabes si Juan llegó tarde anoche?
Has Mary found her keys?, but Have you heard whether Mary has found her keys?
¿Ha encontrado María sus llaves?, pero ¿Te has enterado si María ha encontrado sus llaves?
Las preguntas indirectas en inglés de objeto
Cuando hagas una pregunta de sí o no, el conector que empleas en las preguntas indirectas en inglés corresponde a una palabra que no aparecía en la pregunta directa. Es decir, es una palabra <<nueva>>. En cambio, las de objeto emplean la misma partícula interrogativa de la pregunta directa. Debido a esto, el conector en esta estructura variará en función de la pregunta original.
aux+sujeto+verbo + WHAT/WHO/WHEN/WHERE/WHY/WHOSE/HOW + SUJETO + (AUXILIAR) + VERBO + OBJETO?
Por lo demás, tan solo tienes que escoger la forma en la que iniciar la pregunta y ya está. No obstante, la teoría es más fácil que la práctica, porque te costará un poco acostumbrarte al cambio de orden con las preguntas de objeto directas. Así que, practica un rato este cambio. Por ejemplo, con estas:

Las preguntas indirectas en inglés de sujeto
Al contrario de las preguntas anteriores, las preguntas indirectas en inglés de sujeto no requieren de transformación alguna cuando pierden su carácter directo. De hecho, tan solo tendrás que añadir la forma de la pregunta antes de ellas. Esto es debido a que ya han modificado dicha estructura en su forma original.

Las frases con preguntas indirectas en inglés
Al principio de esta entrada he definido a las preguntas indirectas en inglés como <<camufladas>>, porque la pregunta en sí la realizas con un Do you know, Can you tell me, etc. En realidad, lo que te interesa saber actúa de OBJETO en la frase: Do you know something?
Como consecuencia de esta transformación, el OBJETO introduce una nueva frase con su estructura habitual de SUJETO+AUXILIAR+VERBO+OBJETO, empleando un conector (IF/WHETHER, WHAT; WHO, WHOSE, WHERE, WHEN, WHY, HOW) para unirla a una pregunta directa.
De la misma manera, puedes reproducir esta estructura doble sustituyendo la pregunta directa tanto por una frase afirmativa como una negativa. Pero, claro, en este caso, el contexto te indicará si se trata de una pregunta mucho más indirecta que las anteriores o simplemente la expresión de un aspecto subjetivo por parte de quien la diga.
