Profession (profesión) requires a high degree of education from universities and colleges. This focuses on a special skill to be studied. On the other hand, occupation (oficio) is what somebody is doing for a living. One is paid for doing his/her job.

Thus, not everyone who has finished their degree has the same profession.

Maria is a teacher by profession, but she works as an actress. Being an actress is her occupation.

I am a nurse by profession, but I’m currently working as an English teacher.
